Revenue Segments: How to See What a Company Really Sells

Revenue segments are the parts of a business a company reports separately in its filings, and they often show that the business investors think they own is not the one that makes the money. What are business segments, and why do companies report them?

US accounting rules (Accounting Standards Codification Topic 280) require a public company to report its results the way its chief operating decision maker, usually the chief executive, looks at the business when deciding where to spend money. Each such unit is an operating segment. A segment must be reported separately once it passes size tests, including 10% of combined segment profit or loss ^[10].

Segments, products and regions are different views

Companies usually publish several breakdowns, and they answer different questions:

How do segments show where the profit is?

Amazon: a retailer funded by a cloud business

Amazon's North America segment had $116.2 billion of sales in the second quarter of 2026 and an operating margin of 7.9%; the International segment earned 4.1% on $42.2 billion ^[6]. AWS, with almost the same revenue as International, earned $16.6 billion at a 39.4% margin ^[6]. AWS revenue grew 36.8% from $30.9 billion a year earlier, faster than the company as a whole at 19.6% ^[1]. Valuing Amazon as a single retailer misses the business that produces most of its profit.

Apple: services carry the margin

A single quarter shows the mix; a series shows where the business is going. Three patterns are worth tracking:

Compute two shares for each segment: of revenue and of operating income. The gap between them is the story.
